maximus Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 Hi All. My 1991 Galaxy TDI has been spot on, brilliant on fuel, comfy for the kids etc. etc. But recently I've noticed the oil light takes quite a while to go out after starting up from cold. It takes a good few seconds to go out and the top end gets quite noisey, then say 5 to 10 seconds later the oil light goes out then the top end quiets down again. After a recent run and the engine is warmed up the oil light goes out straight away. I've changed the oil and filter twice since getting it and have used the Halfords semi-synthetic 10W40. I see some posts about the oil pickup pipe being blocked but that seems to be related to the oil light coming on during driving. Any help would be much appreciated as the Galaxy is otherwise fine (apart from Climate control...) Thanks in advanceMark Quote
mikej Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 I would have thought oil starvation is the problem on startup , oil thicker when cold ! once warm or after a run oil is thinned out and can reach the top of the engine from sump much easier so this would tie in with what you are describing . Pickup pipe , oil pump or other oil ways blocked for my money , doesn't really matter how many times you put new oil in if the pipe or oil ways are blocked it will still be starved of oil when cold as said the oil will be thicker ! my own view mind....... :D Quote
angusuk Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 seems like your pump is struggling to pump the oil round so try a good engine flush to cleane all the crap out then try a thinner oil. Quote
seatkid Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 Considering your Galaxy was built 4 years before official production started, its not doing too bad... :D Take off the sump and clean the pickup gauze on the pickup pipe. Quote
big_kev Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 I've changed the oil and filter twice since getting it and have used the Halfords semi-synthetic 10W40. That is a diesel oil isn't it ? Also be very wary about engine flushing.......one of the most popular ways to destroy an engine.....imo. Quote
maximus Posted October 3, 2007 Author Report Posted October 3, 2007 Oops, thats a 1999 TDI, not a 1991, doh!Yeah it's diesel oil I'm using, I know it takes a second ro so for the oil pressure to get up to the correct level but mine is taking way to long. I'll take the sump off at the weekend and see what I find. Any tips on sump removal? I've got axle stands so getting under shouldn't be a problem. Oh and it is 10W40 oil I should be using isn't it? I guess I could use 5W30 fully synthetic but does a Galaxy TDI engine really need fully synthetic? Anyone tried Magnatec, would that be worth a try? Or maybe Slick50? Quote
chazhead Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Slick 50 - no way, never, month of sundays etc etc. Teflon particles = Kaboom. I have no experience of the diesel motor but it sounds as tho you are using the correct oil, and as you have said have changed it and the filter already then no matter what oil you put in it will not get rid of the symptoms you are describing. 'Restricted' oil path or oil pump IMHO. Quote
mumof4 Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Thought it was 5w40 for the diesel engine?or is that just the PD engine? Quote
seatkid Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) Oh and it is 10W40 oil I should be using isn't it? I guess I could use 5W30 fully synthetic but does a Galaxy TDI engine really need fully synthetic? If you used had fully synthetic from the start you probably wouldnt have got this problem, which is probably due to sludge. Fully synthetic is best, it must have VW505.00 approval , stamped on the can for a 1999 TDi 5W-40 or 0W-40 is ideal. 10W-40 will probably be semi-synthetic - still good but not as good as fully synthetic esp in high temperatures. Do not under any circumstances use oil additives. At best you will be wasting money, at worst you will ruin the engine. Tips on removing sump pan - Don't do it on your best carpet or your pristine block paved drive...... Edited October 3, 2007 by seatkid Quote
Dave-G Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 Sounds like the old gal has done a lot of short trips in it's past. A darned good run does em a power of good occasionally. Quote
maximus Posted October 4, 2007 Author Report Posted October 4, 2007 Sounds like the old gal has done a lot of short trips in it's past. A darned good run does em a power of good occasionally. Funny you should say that. We've just 1500 miles twice in the last month visiting family in Scotland, so the old Gal's had a few really long runs. Is there a way I can check the oil pressure, and does anyone know what the oil pressure should be when cold at idle and hot at idle? Cheers for all the help Quote
